I’m trying to get into the Christmas cheer thing this year. For some reason, I am just not feeling it. Don’t get me wrong, I have put deliberate thought in to what I am giving to friends, to my guy, to my family. But this year only a few decorations have been put out, the little tree I picked up already bit the dust (water, did you say I had to water that? Every day, seriously?). No lights this year, but I did get a wreath. I have been meaning to wrap a few gifts and I literally had to force myself to get it done Sunday night.
Gee whiz! Not my usual positive attitude, right?
I have done everything possible to get back in the vibe.
Cut waay back on Facebook due to the “my way or the highway” attitude of others. The rancor is exhausting.
No shopping mall time but in all honesty, no sane person goes there this time of year except for the last minute shoppers searching for the ultimate deal. I’d rather go with quality, thank you very much.
I have been making food gifts, which if you recall, being in a kitchen is my true happy place. This year I am making a tomato based enchilada sauce, using dried guajillo peppers, roasted onions and garlic, organic crushed tomatoes, and a pinch of cumin. YUM!
I have been making holiday calls, too. Calling is incredibly rewarding! When I hear a friend’s voice appreciate my out of the blue phone call, it is a gift to them and a gift to myself. Years ago, I made a commitment that when I thought of someone, I picked up the phone and called. It is the best new habit I continue to this day..
I have been hiking again, missing Zeke but missing the Boise foothills, too. I even took a nap on Sunday. Last week, I binge watched a television series called Designated Survivor to get my Kiefer Sutherland fix.
Wait a minute! Silly me, I am in the holiday spirit! It does not take a getting a tree or hanging lights or writing cards.
It takes giving yourself self-care time – take that nap or bubble bath. It takes reaching out and to your family and friends with calls or text messages. And most of all, sharing your love to those who mean the most to you all year round.
Merry Christmas everyone!
